Tambour sideboard

I designed and built a tambour side table in solid elm. The table features rounded edges, slanted legs, and horizontally sliding tambour doors running in custom-made grooves.

Into details

Each detail is the result of careful planning, testing, and execution. Custom jigs, controlled tolerances, and material considerations ensure that all components interact seamlessly.

Crafted from solid elm, selected for its stability, workability, and expressive grain. All main components are dimensioned, planed, and joined to ensure structural integrity and long-term durability.

Tambour grooves are milled using a 12 mm cutter with controlled depth and stop positions, ensuring consistent alignment and smooth horizontal movement of the slats.

The tambour is composed of individually machined slats, mounted on a flexible canvas backing. This allows controlled flexibility while maintaining alignment within the groove system.

The base is constructed using angled legs (15°) and reinforced with domino joinery and glue-up techniques, providing both strength and accurate geometry.

The construction accounts for wood movement through the use of internal spacing, groove tolerances, and mechanical fastening methods such as Z-clips where applicable.

All wooden components are pre-treated and finished prior to final assembly. The surface is sealed with shellac, applied in approximately five layers with intermediate sanding, creating a smooth, durable finish while enhancing the natural depth and tone of the elm.
